Canadian Idol Final Two

Last chance for Melissa O'Neil and Rex Goudie to win the title. I am hanging out in a hotel room in Northern Ontario so I may as well live blog the "then there were two" Idol. Here goes.

Melissa O'Neil

Angel of the Morning:

Pops: sung elevator-music style. Well maybe there is no other way. One of Melissa's problems is she can come off with no energy as she has several times in the past. I found the performance pretty boring. Most of the time the vocals sounded good but I just did not find it compelling enough.

Mavis: sounds a little sharp in the high parts and there is a lot of lower register stuff that is not strong. A little CHIME fm.

A Broken Wing:

Pops: Another lack of energy song. I really think she should have gone with something upbeat. She sings so much better on the higher notes - why not pick a song that doesn't start so low? She is a much better singer than Rex but her low-key performances tonight could open the door.

Mavis: Some beautiful notes in this song with some good emotion - worked for me.

Alive:

Pops: Wow, started off really, really bad. But as with Rex the guitars come in pretty quick and hides it. Once it gets back to the verse it is tough again. This song may be just too low for her. By the way, what a terrible outfit! The second half of the song was better for her but I must say I did prefer the Rex Goudie version.

Mavis: What's with the corset?? Sugary and sweet but she's not really a rocker and the song doesn't overly suit her - did they figure Suzi was going to win?? A lot of the time it seemed that her mouth movements didn't sync with the vocals ... hmm ...

Rex Goudie

Alive: the new Canadian Idol single.

Pops: Again weak at the beginning with the low stuff. But the song kicks in pretty quick - a little rock influenced actually - but that may just be the Goudie arrangement. Somebody teach this guy some stage prescence quick! He is just so stiff. The "rock-on" fingers are so cheeze! Not a bad song and to be honest that is about as good as it gets with Rex Goudie. All things considered a reasonable performance.

Mavis: I still think while this guy could easily head a decent band he's not the better singer in this competition. Did a very nice job of a song that suits him well.

Bulletproof:

Pops: So far another "not awful" performance from Rex Goudie. It is amazing how much better things seems when you lower your expectations. He struggles with some of the lower notes in the song but we already know he can struggle at times. He certainly has picked the right night to have his strongest night.

Mavis: very nice but exactly the same as the Blue Rodeo version - what happened to making a song your own? It suits his voice but I'd rather hear Jim Cutty. One of his stronger vocal performances (which isn't saying that much).

Superman:

Pops: Barely recognizable without the falsetto of the original. But the original can be tough to listen to so that is not all bad. Another reasonable performance.

Mavis: This song has been so totally overplayed on the radio that I can hardly stand it. Rex has some really bad notes ("fall") and again didn't stray significantly from the original (just not that high).

Predictions:

Pops: It is actually a lot tougher than I thought it would be. If Melissa O'Neil had performed better this would have been a no-brainer. Here is my problem. I am not sure if Rex Goudie actually won the night or just exceeded expectations better. And I think the answer to that question determines who the next Canadian Idol is. I think Melissa deserves it because she is the better singer. But the single does sound better with Rex singing. I'm sticking with Melissa O'Neil though.

Mavis: I came into the night thinking Melissa all the way but Rex did have his best night in many weeks. However, Rex on his best night is still a far cry vocally from what Melissa can do. Even though the Idol song was written for Suzi (or Rex), I'm going with Melissa. BTW, I will be happy to see the end of the Zac show - in fact maybe we should give the title to him for all of the limelight that he stole from the competitors. Looking forward to Sass performing tonight!
