Canadian Idol Final Three
Barenaked Ladies night on Canadian Idol has come and gone and Mavis and I give it mixed reviews. Some of their better songs don't fit the format so they were skipped. Instead we got some less popular (read - never heard) ballads.
Rex Goudie
Song 1: Brian Wilson
Mavis: BNL guys aren't the best singers and Rex is right with them. They have careers so he could to. Stickman dancing.
Pops: How many different ways can you say he can't sing. This song would have gone nowhere if this were the version released.
Song 2: Call & Answer
Mavis: Rough start. Doesn't have a melodic enough voice for this song. My husband's rendition of "Courage" is better than this.
Pops: Voice cracked on the first note! He is butchering it and he knows it. He somewhat in the middle. There are so many big notes at the end of that song that he didn't he bother to try.
Aaron Walpole
Song 1: Break your heart
Mavis: Never heard of this song. Does a nice job - I just can't believe this guy is Top 3 in Canada.
Pops: Cheese to 11. The come hither look doesn't work with someone who looks like Aaron - but he certainly went for it. O.K.
Song 2: Enid
Mavis: Somehow I knew he would do this stinker. He does an O.K. job of a crappy song.
Pops: This was never a good song, anyway. Not much actual singing in this song. The jumping around really hurt the vocals as well. Waste of time.
Melissa O'Neil
Song 1: The Old Apartment
Mavis: How does a girl sing BNL stuff. She did a very nice job of working in some high parts - nice.
Pops: I have to say I was hoping that Aaron would do this song - comes off a little syrupy with her voice. Complete lack of energy. It is tough because it is such a signature song but I don't she lived up to it and she opened the door.
Song 2: When I Fall
Mavis: Didn't really know this sing. She was a little shrill and I was pretty bored overall. She often picks boring songs.
Pops: A pretty mediocre performance of a mediocre song. She sang it nicely.
I will leave the post-amble to Mavis: Rex Goudie was overmatched but I can't believe it puts Aaron Walpole in the top two. We must raise the age of this show - we got nuttin'
