Canadian Idol Elimination Round 3

Pops is flying solo tonight in a hotel room in parts unknown - thus I may as well live blog!
Mavis is now (June 29th, 9:44am) adding her comments after reviewing a taped version of the show (Mavis does Tai Chi on Tuesdays).

Barbra Preisman

Pops: Jazz singer - Ella speaks to her..let's see! No personality, no range. The scat was cool but no where near enough. Nice knowing ya.

Mavis: Unique - perfect for broadway. No chance.

Giselle Correia

Pops: Pretenders tune - done well so far. I like her voice but I would like to hear more range. She tried to hit a big note at the end...but the song didn't allow it and she missed it. Judges agree. Almost but not quite.

Mavis: Piano's too loud, is this girl sexy like the song? Song stays on the same notes - good voice.

Diego Alvarez

Pops: This guy can sing - latin George Michael? That's a tad weird, as is the way he pronounces some of the words but again he can flat out sing. Wildcard.

Mavis: Vibrato is annoying, couple of bad notes but nice voice. Song?

Devika Mathur

Pops: Another good singer who is not used to singing in English. You can call me on this if you'd like but it is distracting to me. It is a shame she didn't pick a more upbeat song, she seems to have a bold personality in the interview but reserved in the song. Judges love her.

Mavis: Strong voice - worth another look. Wild card.

Rex Goudie

Pops: Wow. What a great voice. The lighter trick was cheezy but he is just too good for it to cost him. I don't need to see anything else. Top 10. Probably much higher.

Mavis: Newfoundland AND can sing - he's in. Doing his own lighter waving was sad. Sexy. Top 10.

Michelle Madeira

Pops: Another strong voice but a tad boring. Nice big note but no prescence.

Mavis: I really can't stand when my bangs are as longs as hers. Nice voice but she was shouting the high notes - hurts the ears a bit. Bad last note!

Barrett Peitsch

Pops: If you want a song that is not too slow pick a song that is supposed to be sung quicker. It sounds like he is rushing Walking on Memphis. He has a nice voice, he is good looking but this version didn't work. It is hard to tell whether it will matter - he could get through on charisma alone. Wildcard.

Mavis: Nasal - not the character that Rex is but nice changes in the song - nice voice, nice dimples.

Amber Fleury

Pops: I love this song so she has a chance with me. Good emotion and nice tone. She won me over but I doubt she moves on. The judges are working overtime to get her through. The replay changed my mind. Top 10.

Mavis: I had already decided my top 10 picks and looking at Amber I knew she'd have to blow me away .. she did. Perfect - like the early Jann Arden - great voice but I don't know if Canada will vote for her ... but then did Ryan Malcolm have "the look"?? Top 10.

3 Comments:

  • I think that Amber & Rex deserve to be in the top 10, but we'll see if Barret Peitsch's dimples hypnotize the voters.

In fact, so far, I'd say Amber & Rex are my picks for the final 2.
